This project comprises 14 homes designed to provide housing for whānau in need. It represents a collaboration between Te Māhurehure Marae, Kāinga Ora, and community organisations, emphasising sustainability and the preservation of Māori tikanga. By offering secure housing and wraparound support, the project fosters a sense of belonging and empowers residents on their journey to long-term stability. Te Kāinga Atawhai stands as a testament to manaakitanga and innovative community-driven solutions to housing challenges.
The project faced significant challenges due to construction during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns and supply chain disruptions delayed progress, while strict health and safety protocols added complexities to the build. Despite these hurdles, the commitment of all stakeholders ensured the project was completed, highlighting the resilience and determination of the community.
